What you are actually buying
A boat with nobody else on it. Up to six of you, a skipper who is certified and first-aid trained, life jackets, bottled water, a fridge, a dining table, and a canopy with closed weather protection. There are two routes to choose between: the Eastern Archipelago or the City Front. Both pass Suomenlinna. Neither lands.
The two routes leave from different meeting points. That sentence is the reason this review exists. It is very easy to book the route you want, read the confirmation quickly, and walk to the place you assumed. Read the meeting point on your own booking, the evening before, and match it to a map. The quay at Market Square is long, and Helsinki has several harbours within a short walk of each other — where the boats leave from lays them out.
The canopy, and why I keep mentioning it
Helsinki gets about 675 mm of rain a year and it is spread fairly evenly through it. August, the month most people visit, is the wettest at around 80 mm. On a scheduled sightseeing boat a wet day means going below and looking through glass. On this one you have a canopy and closed weather protection over a small boat, which is a meaningfully different experience of the same rain. I would take Jarno’s advice. The difference between the short and the long version is half an hour, and on a private boat that half hour is where the conversation happens. An hour is enough to see the city front. An hour and a half is enough to ask things.

Small groups who want to talk to each other rather than to a loudspeaker. Anyone travelling with someone who finds crowds or noise hard. People who want the boat to go where they are interested rather than along a fixed loop. Families of four to six with small children, who get a fridge, a table and no strangers — see going with children. And anyone with one fixed, possibly wet afternoon in Helsinki.
Who should book something else: solo travellers and couples, for whom a private charter is a lot of boat for two; groups of more than six; and anyone who actually wants to land somewhere, which means the RIB or the island boats.
Ask for the City Front route if it is your first day in Helsinki and the Eastern Archipelago if you have already seen the cathedral fronts from the water. And take the longer option. Jarno is right, and the half hour is the cheapest thing on the whole booking.
