The thing nobody tells you about “evening”

Helsinki gets 18 hours and 50 minutes of daylight at midsummer, and the white nights — when it never gets properly dark — run roughly from 12 May to 2 August. An evening sailing in late June is a sailing in broad daylight. That is not a fault. It is beautiful, low, sideways light on the water for hours, and the islands look completely different from how they look at noon. But if you booked expecting a sunset, book in late August or September instead, when there is an actual sunset to see. More on this on the best time of day page and on the daylight page.

What the extra hour buys

An hour more water, and a bar. The daytime loop is a tight ninety minutes and it is efficient; the evening boat is slower about the same archipelago, and it has somewhere to sit inside when the deck gets cold. It also has toilets and Wi-Fi, which matter more than they should on a boat carrying people who have been walking since nine in the morning.

The commentary is through a downloadable app rather than a loudspeaker, in 28 languages. Bring headphones and download it before you leave the quay, because the Wi-Fi on board is shared with everyone else who forgot.

Local tip

Book this one for the shoulder season if the light is the point. May and September are milder and quieter than July, the sun actually sets, and the boat is not full. The trade is a real chance of cold and rain — August is the wettest month of the year here, at about 80 millimetres. Bring the coat and you have the better trip.
