How the timings work

You check in during the afternoon, sail in the early evening, spend the night on board and arrive mid-morning. That shape is the whole point of the route: it uses the hours you would have slept through anyway. It also means the useful part of the sailing is at each end, because the middle happens in the dark on open water.

Viking Line sails from Katajanokka, east of the centre and served by trams 4 and 5. Tallink Silja sails from the Olympia Terminal in the South Harbour. Summer changes how it feels

An early-evening departure in June is not an evening departure at all. White nights, when it never gets properly dark, run roughly 12 May to 2 August, and on 21 June there are 18 hours 50 minutes of daylight. So a 17:00 sailing out through the archipelago happens in broad daylight and stays that way for hours. In October the same departure leaves in the dusk and there is nothing to see. Comparing it with Tallinn

Tallinn is about two hours away with around ten crossings a day, which makes it a day trip. Stockholm is 17 to 18 hours away with one or two, which makes it a journey. Practical points

Book in advance; this is a travel booking with a check-in, not a ticket you buy at a gate. Carry a passport or ID card because carriers check identity. And allow for the fact that arrival is mid-morning: you will not do much in Stockholm before eleven, and planning a full day from the ship is optimistic.
